[Sellers, George Escol]. Ferguson, Eugene S. [editor]. EARLY ENGINEERING REMINISCENCES (1815-40) OF GEORGE ESCOL SELLERS. Washington, D.C.: Smithsonian Institution, Museum of History and Technology, 1965. 4to, original gray cloth, lettered in black. xix, (1), 202, (2) pages; portrait of Sellers; numerous text illustrations; endpaper maps. Near fine. An important source of information on the early 19th-century workings of the Philadelphia Mint. Born in Philadelphia in 1808, Sellers as a young boy roamed the mechanical shops of the city keenly observing their activities. Possessed of an uncommonly good memory, he began recording his reminiscences at age 75 in various issues of the American Machinist. An entire chapter in this fascinating volume is devoted to his observations of Mint operations and another is devoted to the activities of Jacob Perkins.
