Early 20th C. Vellum Banjo
Item/Description: Vintage early 20th-century, open-back banjo featuring a dark-finished neck and a well-worn natural animal hide, or vellum head. Includes friction tuning pegs suggesting it was produced between 1900-1930s before geared pegs became standard. The absence of a large wooden resonator on the back means it is an open-back style banjo, which generally produces a quieter, warmer, and "plunkier" tone favored by old-time and clawhammer players.
