Early 1800's Green Chevron Trade Bead Necklace
Offered in this lot we have a four layer green chevron trade bead necklace originating from the early 19th century. The necklace shows 95 green four layer trade beads on a woven cord. Chevron beads are special glass beads; the first specimens of this type were created by glass bead makers in Venice and Murano, Italy, toward the end of the 14th century. Most of the Venetian chevron beads made for export to West Africa and to the Americas have layers in red, blue, and white with rare exceptions. The beads show layers of white, red and green glass cut into beads. Provenance: From the collection of Dr. David and Marsha Bowerly of Oregon. The piece comes with an original museum collection tag stating, "5198 Gr Chevron $325" and "Tomsky #63". The necklace shows good condition and measures approximately 35" in circumference.
