TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, March 19, 1970. In a letter to famed composer, Igor Stravinsky, Fairbanks writes, in part: “I’ve had occasion to reminisce, boastfully you may be sure, during the past week when I was asked to substitute for Bob Montgomery as Narrator for your magnificently moving ‘Oedipus Rex’ at Philharmonic, with Claudio Abbado’s conducting. Although it was a completely alien thing for me to do…I was absolutely enchanted by every moment of my three rehearsals and four performances. Also, as you undoubtedly have heard, the work enjoyed a fine public and critical reception…I was speaking to our mutual good friend, Arnold Weisberger, yesterday and told him how sad I was over the fact that an inscribed photograph you gave me years ago was destroyed in a fire in our house…I added that I’d long wanted to write and ask you if you would mind giving me another one, also inscribed, to take its place, but I had lost my nerve—due to the length of time that has passed since we last knew each other…I hope you will find it convenient and possible as it would be enormously appreciated…I’m delighted to learn of you being here in New York. Perhaps, one day, I may have the honor of calling upon you and paying my too-long delayed personal respects.” In fine condition, with light creasing and a faint paperclip impression to the top left corners. Fantastic content dripping with artistic praise, from one entertainer to another.
