This is a nice example of a Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle that was manufactured in 1888. The top barrel flat ahead of the rear sight is marked "MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" and "40-65 W.C.F." at the breech. The 1884 and '85 patent dates and the serial number are marked on the lower tang. The barrel is equipped with a dovetailed Winchester Express front sight with white bead and a blank in the rear sight dovetail, with a factory installed tang mounted short range peep sight. The rifle is equipped with special order double triggers. Blue barrel, magazine tube and bolt, with casehardened finish on the remaining metal surfaces, full magazine tube and mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a steel end cap and crescent buttplate.

Very fine. The barrel retains 90% original blue finish with areas of thinning, edge wear and some wear on the top flat from adjusting the rear sight. The bolt retains 98% original bright blue finish. The receiver retains 60% of the original case colors on the right side with a smooth gray and silver gray patina on the balance. The forend cap and hammer retain most of the original vivid case colors. The lever has a smooth gray patina with strong 30% original case colors, mainly on the left side and in protected areas. The buttplate shows much of the original faded case colors mixed with a smooth gray patina. The wood is also very fine with 98% original varnish remaining, and showing some scattered minor dents and scratches. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is fine.
