33. Custer, George A. Extraordinary Civil War-date cabinet photograph signed ("G.A. Custer"), 4.25 x 6.9 in. (108 x 175 mm.), sepia-tone image showing the intrepid cavalryman mounted on his horse. The photograph was taken at Gen. Alfred Pleasonton's headquarters at Falmount, Virginia, during the first week of June 1863. Boldly signed with sentiment in the lower margin, "Truly yours, G.A. Custer, A.D.C. [aide de camp]". Soiling. This image was most certainly signed in June 1863, as on the 26th, Custer received word that he had been promoted to the rank of brigadier general, becoming the youngest general in the army. Incidentally, the horse on which Custer is shown was shot out from beneath him just four weeks after this photograph was taken, when on 2 July 1863 (the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg), Custer charged the Confederate cavalry at Hunterstown, Pennsylvania, losing 32 of his men in this one brief engagement (he was later cited for gallantry). $6,000 - $8,000
