Crow Spontoon Pipe Tomahawk w/ Beaded Drop c. 1850
This is an outstanding authentic spontoon pipe tomahawk dating to circa 1850-1860’s with a gorgeous beaded and fringed drop from the Crow Native American Indians of Montana. The piece shows a Revolutionary War style spontoon head which is blacksmith hand forged showing no basal processes or curls, just a simple pike with a slightly raised medium ridge running down the center of both sides, an attributed that has been well documented on early authentic weapons. The solid wood ash handle haft is adorned with hundreds of brass trade tacks of various sizes in a linear design and overall shows a nice, mellow patina with minor nicks and dings from honest age and Indian use. Along with the nice patina is a worn gripping area from much use. Spontoon pipe tomahawks shown without basal processes are scarcely seen with this being a truly terrific example with phenomenal art appeal. The Intermountaine-Crow Apsaalooke beaded drop is attached beneath the gripping area and shows a typical triangular shape with long hand cut Indian tanned hide fringe and beadwork in a geometric pattern. The beadwork is all period correct 19th Century glass trade seed cen beads in colors such as greasy yellow, cobalt, red white heart, Cheyenne pink, greasy blue, chalk white. The Indian tanned hide comprising the beaded drop is Buffalo Bison along with old trade clothe. Provenance: From the ex-collection of Ben Thompson and Ian West. Overall the war club measures at the head 10 ¼” by 2 ¼” and 26” in length.
