Crow Pipe Tomahawk w/ Beadwork c. 1870 RARE
This is an outstanding authentic circa 1870’s blacksmith hand-forged pipe tomahawk from the Crow Native American Indian of Colorado. The piece has an exceptional collection history being part of the Ex-Collections of Thomas Dalton, Dr. Dewey Scruggs, Jennifer Scruggs-Alderman and Tom Hardy. The piece is a strikingly attractive example showing a hand-forged / blacksmith forged wide “Western” tomahawk head that has been forged from an old gun barrel with the rifling still visible inside the elongated pipe bowl. The tomahawk shows a rear-facing upward-curled basal process or spur added for decoration, forged chevrons and forged wide mouldings on each side. The hardwood haft handle is adorned with artfully applied brass trade tack designs along with a dangle drop attached comprised of an old tarnished thimble, strips of old trade ribbon and an old brass hawk bell. At the gripping area is an old beaded Buffalo hide collar decorated with decidedly Plateau beadwork done in Cheyenne pink, greasy yellow, chalk white, and cobalt in a typical Crow patterns showing some slight bead loss. This is truly a fine large, heavy authentic gun barrel forged example with fantastic art appeal and fine preserved condition. Measures overall 23.25 inches in length with a 9.5 inch long head.
