Maryland “Black Money” June 8, 1780 Six Dollars Rarity
State of Maryland. June 8, 1780. Six Dollars. “Black Money” Issue. PCGS graded Very Fine-20.
Fr. MD-113. This rare issue and denomination is missing in virtually every advanced Colonial Rarity and/or Maryland Currency collection. This example being only the first $6 denomination note we have offered. Listed in Newman with a valuation of $3,750 in Very Fine, this Revolutionary War 1780 Maryland “Black Money” note derives its namesake from the use of heavy dark black printed border designs on its face side. Within those back borders is the denomination SIX DOLLARS in text, numerical “6” and also appears in Roman numerals. This circulated note ranks as one of the finest of only a few known Six Dollars denomination existent. All of the important border designs are clear, well printed on clean period paper having excellent centering. Its holder states restorations, apparently from conservation to seal scattered internal splits yet it has nice eye appeal for the grade. An opportunity to acquire this affordable Maryland “Black Money” issue rarity.
