Clive of India (1935) Montagu Love/Leo G. Carroll Costumes
Clive of India (1935) Montagu Love/Leo G. Carroll Costumes - Although taking place in the mid-1700's, when England's East India Company had a stronghold on their Empire to the East, the classic feature "Clive Of India" (1935), was one of the first outcries about England's exploitation of his vast country that they controlled. In fact, Mahatma Gandhi was heavily influenced by the movie, and only 12 years later, he helped to gain India's independence. These are two exquisite and extremely rare hero screen worn costumes from this epic movie. The first was screen-worn by Montagu Love, who played Governor Pigot in the film. His costume is an astonishingly detailed peach floral brocade jacket with peach and gold striped moiré silk cuffs. It includes the original ''United Costumers, Inc.'' tag with ''Montague [sic] Love / 48 / #2'' handwritten in ink, as well as a second original studio wardrobe tag attached to the jacket's sleeve reading, ''Montague [sic] Love / 11031''. The second hero screen worn costume is that of beloved character actor Leo G. Carroll who played "Mr. Manning". His costume includes a burgundy and gold silk vest with a floral motif and nine gilt metal buttons. It also includes the original "United Costumers, Inc." tag with ''Leo Carroll 40'' and ''Leo G. Carroll / United Costumes / 9260'' handwritten inside. Both costumes are in remarkably good condition, considering they are over 80 years old.
