Original 4pp. letter from May 11, 1862, from Ethan Roberts of Mindoro, Wisconsin to EW Smith in Baileyville, Illinois. Cover has vignette of John C. Fremont. Letter has war news: "We were very glad to hear...that you and Church were so fortunate to escape from those terrible battles unhurt. We take the Tribune and have often wondered if the Baileyville Boys were in them and now your letter comes telling of your escape and of the death of many of whom we were acquainted. Baileyville surely has cause to mourn...I cannot think this Devilish Rebellion is all right...Dana thinks the Rebels are not very sharp shooters or they might have hit Church in two days shooting at him..."
