5th Maryland Infantry Civil War Era Fancy Dress Coatee
c. 1850-60s Civil War Era, Gray Fabric and Embroidered Fancy Ordnance Coatee with 46 Original Brass Buttons, Very Fine.
This is an original Grey fabric, Civil War Era, fancy Dress Coatee, worn by a soldier in the 5th Maryland Infantry Regiment. Overall it is in very nice condition, with 46 Brass Buttons and 2 embroidered ordnance patches on the tails. There are different Buttons; The largest are marked, “Waterbury Button Co. Extra” on the back and have the 5th Maryland Regiment on the front, with “Decus Et Praesidium” in a belt around the edge. Four of these large buttons have different back marks; (1) has “J. Gminder Baltimore” and (2) are from “Devlin & Co. NY” and (1) is from “Scovill Mfg. Co. Waterbury” (CT). The smaller cuff buttons are from the Waterbury Button Co. which come with a silver back. Of the smaller buttons, (4) have a slight push down and (1) of the Devlin larger buttons has some minor damage to the back with most of the original gilt on all the buttons being present. The Grey fabric is in very nice condition, amazingly well preserved, with just a couple trivial small holes. The inner liner has a ripped right armpit and a few holes and shows staining on the inside of the cuff and armpits and on the quilted part of liner, as would be expected on an actually worn uniform, attesting to its originality. The inside silk on the collar is in good shape, becoming unsewn from its liner, a few stitches having come loose on the edges and on front black silk connecting buttons. The original liner is quilted, and stuffed with raw cotton, having some burlap in the usual places. The color of this outer coatee is rich Grey, not Blue and has the usual appearance for the 1850-60s, with the ordnance patches made of metal threads. Much of the gilt on these threads is gone, though it remains quite bright in the areas under the small buttons. The shoulder insignia is lacking. This coatee is small in size, likely below a Size 35. Very likely an item which saw use during the Civil War, as this style was used both pre-Civil War and during, and the buttons appear to be of 1860s vintage. Our estimate range is conservative, starting a about half of its hammer price when last sold at auction in 2007. A desirable Civil War Era Maryland Uniform in excellent condition for display.
