24. [Civil War]. Civil War autograph historical manuscript (unsigned), 15 pages (5 x 8 in.; 127 x 203 mm.), on four separate leaves. Written in an unknown hand, most likely by a Union soldier who had a contemporary knowledge of the events he describes. The content is fantastic, stretching from the beginning of hostilities at Ft. Sumter through the battles of the fall 1862 campaigns in Northern Virginia. Some staining to leaves and separation at folds; on the whole, in good condition with bright, clear text. The manuscript reads in part, grammatical and spelling errors uncorrected: ...The United States at the present time is involved in a war to crush a Rebellion that could have been crushed in its infancy but the head of Government was weak in the hands of the northern population the President was an imbecile... [Malvern Hill] The Rebel batteries were soon silenced. Their infantry were seen advancing from the woods in solid column the only marched up to meet death and destruction as they had been imbibing in a mixture of whiskey & gunpowder. The artillery opened the destruction was immense. The artillery poured volley after volley. They retreated back and her division was seen coming out the famous Irish Brigade charged bayonets on them the Irishmen came upon like fiends..." An excellent primary-source document covering the first two years of the Civil War. Too much content to list. Full transcript available upon request. $200 - $300
