Circa 1954 Marilyn Monroe Signed Baseball Photo
Circa 1954 Marilyn Monroe Signed Baseball Photograph. For the third time in as many Signature Auctions, Heritage Sports Collectibles is pleased and proud to present to our bidding clientele a piece that celebrates the brief romance of twentieth century America's most famous celebrity couple. This phenomenal, one of a kind piece first appeared upon the collecting scene when it was presented within the historic Barry Halper Collection auction of 1999. Our consignor sought us out after our October 2006 sale of a baseball signed by DiMaggio and Monroe made worldwide headlines (and set a World's Record for Autographed Baseballs) with a price of $191,200, and our May 2007 auction of a photo signed by the pair realized $89,625. Our consignor believed, as do we, that this remarkable photo belongs in a similar realm.

While this piece is signed by Marilyn alone, it goes without saying that she is far and away the more difficult and valuable signature of the two. And this is no ordinary Marilyn Monroe signed photo, if there is such a thing. Not only do we find the ultimate blonde bombshell adopting Joe D's right-handed batting stance, but she references him adoringly in the lengthy inscription she pens to a fan. Marilyn writes, "To Maggie, Joe is one of the greatest performers of our time. I think he is the most attractive male I have ever met, Marilyn Monroe." The blue fountain pen ink has garnered a grade of "9" by the authenticators of PSA/DNA, and the 8x10" photo likewise shows no noteworthy signs of age or wear.

Baseball and Hollywood were never more "American" than they were during that brief span when the top representative of each shared the tabloid spotlight as husband and wife. Sophisticated collectors certainly realize just how important the pair was within the framework of American Pop Culture, as their record-setting bids have indicated. We expect that our bidding clientele will continue to exhibit their scholarship by giving this lot the attention it deserves. LOA from PSA/DNA.
