The Central Pacific Railroad Company was founded in 1861 and federally funded in 1862 when Abraham Lincoln signed the Pacific Railroad Act and determined that Union Pacific and Central Pacific Railroad Co. should construct the transcontinental railroad. Central Pacific Railway Company only used the CPRR Co initials until 1885, after which they were controlled by Southern Pacific Company, and identified as S.P. Co. [Ref: http://cprr.org/Museum/Ephemera/Lock.html]. Riveted brass padlock marked “C.P R.R Co” on rear. Front key drop unmarked. Rear marked “4 83” on edge to indicate a manufacturing date of April 1883. Intact chain fob, chain missing. The presence of a chain fob and the reverse “9” shape of the keyhole indicate this padlock was used to secure switches. Lot also includes a 1.5" x 1.25" rectangular luggage tag on a leather fob. Imprinted "THOMAS PATENT FEB 19TH 1867/ CENTRAL/ PACIFIC R.R./ 11752". - Jacobitz Collection -59563
