Captain Battle Comics #1 (New Friday, 1941) CGC FN/VF 7.0 Cream to off-white pages. Our undying affection for Golden Age comics is in no small part because of books like this one. No, cover art George Harrison was not a master draftsman, in fact he has the nuttiest use of perspective since M.C. Escher, and his grasp of anatomy would make Grey turn pale. But the energy in the art is too good to pass up! As for the title character, who was also a regular in Silver Streak Comics, you might accuse him of being a ripoff of better-known characters, but did any of those other Captains have an eyepatch? Did any of them use a "luceflyer" or a "dissolvo gun?" We think not. In his brilliant essay on Captain Battle in Amazing Heroes #26, Ron Goulart drolly noted that the series "was an alleged quarterly, appearing five times over a five-year period." Goulart credits the interior art to Frank Borth (best known for his work on the Christian Treasure Chest series) and George Mandel, who contributed to a number of publishers in the Golden Age. Overstreet 2006 FN 6.0 value = $432; VF 8.0 value = $900. CGC census 1/06: 2 in 7.0, 4 higher.
