Campo Del Cielo Meteorites From Argentina (5)
For your consideration is this collection of five Campo del Cielo meteorites found in the Gran Chaco Gualamba, Argentina area about 500 miles West of Buenos Aries. It is estimated that the meteorites fell 4,000-6,000 years ago at Campo del Cielo (meaning field of sky or heaven) in Gran Chaco, Gualamba. Twelve very large craters have been found by searchers. The largest Campo meteorite weighs about 30 tons; understandably, it is one of Argentina's national treasures. These meteorites are classed as a coarse octahedrite. The composition is about 94% iron and 6% nickel with scarce minerals present as well. Campo meteorites are also well known for their silicate inclusions. The meteorites are exhibit magnetic properties as they are mostly of iron composite. The meteorites show all different shapes and sizes and exhibit a grey metallic look. The smallest one measures 6/8" L x 5/16" W, while the largest in the collection measures 5/8" L x 5/8" W.
