About 2 7/8” tall, 1 1/8” wide. The “obverse” of this ornate shaker features an embedded Hawaii $1, dated portrait side facing, while the “reverse” side of the shaker is adorned by a silver French 5 francs piece of Louis XVIII. The base on which the shaker stands is a concave silver Spanish 10 reales of Isabel II, portrait side down, her portrait counterstamped with a numeral 4. The top plug of the shaker pulls out for refilling purposes; the stem of the top is hallmarked: “O.C. SHREVE & CO. / SAN FRANCISCO / STERLING / 17.” Shreve & Co. is well known in numismatic circles as the manufacturers of the Panama-Pacific copper frames (of which one is for sale elsewhere in the catalog). We elected to call it a pepper shaker rather than a salt shaker, as salt would have greatly corroded the insides of the shaker if used for such over the past century or so; there is no tell-tale corrosion here. A truly “neat” item that will enhance any numismatic cabinet.
