Ca. 1904 Death of Chief Joseph French Engraving
This is an original engraving Le Petit Journal colored images of the Death of Chief Joseph October 9, 1904, likely by Fortuné Louis Méaulle (1844-1916). This illustration has a very romantic depiction of the "Death of Chief Joseph", one of the "last of the redskins." with accompanying article. It is very interesting to not that the passing of the great Nez Perce Chief made the front page news in this French magazine. Believed to be the only publication showing this wonderful colored scene. The back cover shows an advertisement for "Les Jeux Du Cirque En Annam - Combat d'un tigre et d'um elephant" in excellent bright color. The wood-enraving image is not signed in the image but looks to be the work of Fortuné Louis Méaulle and Henri Meyer. The condition of this Le Petit Journal is well preserved with some minor wear to the corners and browning consistent with the age of the journal. The measurements of this journal is 17 3/4" x 12 3/8".
