This is an amazing, authentic Blackfoot / Blackfeet circa 1890 polychrome painted model tipi with paperwork from Mystic Warriors of Bruce and Ilene Johnson and from the collection of Stephen Johnston. The piece comes with a written and typed paperwork with an image from Mystic Warriors from 2018 referred to as, “Blackfoot Model Tepee, on muslin, circa 1890’s, with wonderful graphic images, including otters, and with original sticks” which sold for $5,500 (in 2018). The model tipi, also referred to as a tepee / teepee or lodge tent, is comprised of muslin trade clothe which is painted with mineral pigment paints in colors of yellow, black and red. The tipi shows eight otter effigy fetish animal images at the middle with a geometric design bordering the bottom and at the top four red bands with the top being painted black with a sun or moon spotted design and Maltese cross. The top is tied with Indian tanned hides and trade twine as well as the bottom.

Provenance: From the Stephen Johnston collection formerly from Darby, Montana and Foster City, CA; purchased in 2018 by Stephen Johnston from Bruce and Ilene Johnson Mystic Warriors Evergreen, Colorado with two printed copies of the receipts which show the piece as being Blackfoot Model Tepee circa 1890 and sold for $5,500. Measures 19.5”H by 14.5”D by 12.5”W.
