Robert Roberts, the Greene Street Saloon & Bowling operator, retained George C. Ross and James D. McKay to construct a one story structure with dimensions of 23 x 38’ on Blair Street (Silverton). George Crawford was a business acquaintance of Silverton investor and store owner Oliver P. Posey. The two men had met back east and Crawford (from Pittsburgh) was lured west by Posey in the Spring of 1882 with an offer of office space in the Posey and Wingate building and access to the region’s most promising investments. These two men formed the Duquesne Mining company in June of 1882 to work a number of promising claims at Ophir [Ref: Nossaman, Allen, “Many More Mountains,” vol. 3, 1998, pp. 265-317]. No. 20, issued to James McKay by James McKay, Treasurer, and William T. Hammond, President on 29 August 1882. Signed on the reverse by Robt. McKay for the Estate of James McKay and witnessed by A. B. Angney, no date given. U/C. There are a few spots of foxing on the back and front. White paper with a black border that has a few wrinkles. Small vignette under the masthead is of wild mustangs and an eagle. Vignette to the left is of miners underground working in a well, with the help of candlelight, filling up buckets with ore and calling to those on the surface to pull the bucket up. Good condition.
