Manhattan Mining District. According to Carl Swift, Manhattan, the farthest east of the camps around Rand, was located about four miles northwest of Rustic Camp on the Poudre River. It was a bustling community during the 1880s when some good ore was found in the neighboring hills. Several cabins and stores were constructed, primarily along one wide thoroughfare which served as the main street. The ore, however, was not of high quality and the cost of getting it out of the isolated area was too great. No. 662 issued to J. J. Barnell by Chas. H. Tebgunbury [sic], Secretary and Frank G. McClain [?]. Signed by Barnell on reverse. Not canceled. On white paper with a black border. Very unique vignette of a lamb, sugar beets or parsnips, with an inset of miners pick axing and maneuvering an ore cart all under the title of “Industries of Northern Colorado.” One small nick on the bottom edge. Good condition.
