Others, including Dick Irwin, soon followed suit. The Hardscrabble District was organized in 1872. Two of the best strikes were not made until 1874: The Pocahontas and the Humboldt. Rosita hit is peak during the mid and late 70s when its population topped 2,000. In addition to several hotels and saloons, it had several processing mills. The town was one of the wilder western towns. The best mines were the Senator, Pringle, Humboldt and Pocahontas [Ref: Cross, Whitman, Geology of Silver Cliff and the Rosita Hills, Colorado, 1884; Eberhart, Perry, Guide to the Colorado Ghost Towns and Mining Camps, 1959].
