Incorporated in Colorado in 1871. Montgomery Mining District. Fred Holabird wrote “the mine was opened in 1871 at an elevation of 14,000 feet on Mt. Bross. The Moose was one of the richest of Colorado’s early silver mines, producing $3 million in its first 5 years of operation. When sorted the ore yielded from 50 to 400 ounces of silver per ton. Development included about 10,000 ft [sic] of tunnels and 3 shafts with a number of improvements such as ore houses, shaft houses, bunk and lodging houses. Quartzville grew up below this noted mine at an elevation of 11,500 feet and had a population of some 2,000, served by a post office, bank and numerous other businesses. The Moose closed in the depression of 1893 and many of Quartzville’s buildings were moved away” [Ref: Holabird, Western Americana, Auction # 9, Volume 2: Colorado, p. 97, 2001].
