Photograph measures 5 3/4" x 3 3/4" mounted on a white matte the measures 6 3/8" x 4 1/8". A street scene with buildings on opposite sides of the road and an oversize tree in the middle. Focus is great, where signs down the street can be seen, "R.L. C. Cannon Hardware, F.J. Meeker Grocers, and Turf Exchange Music Hall". High contrast. A short newspaper column has been cut out and glued down onto the back of the matte about the big tree. The column explains it was a "giant cottonwood [tree] that stood in the middle of South Union near C street until it was cut down on June 25, 1883." At first the city had decided to keep it because it was so big and a part of the cottonwood grove. They finally decided to cut it down after it had grown too large and tree branches would fall onto horses and people on street. "It measured 26 feet in circumference at the base and stood 88 feet high." The rings had shown that the tree had been 380 years old when it had been cut down, and the "city paid $250 to have it removed." M. W. Mealey, New Portrait Gallery. Today the trunk resides in the City park zoo. Photo is in great condition, matte has small punctures, a fold to the left and black marker on the reverse.
