c1880s-90s-This is a great photo showing five men and one woman seated in an Express wagon drawn by two horses. The wagon is covered but the sides are open, and “Express” can plainly be seen on the side of the vehicle. They are stopped overlooking a large lake or series of lakes, and hotels may be seen on the shores of the peninsula in the background. The area is called Evergreen Lakes, which are near Leadville. The photo measures 4.75 x 6.75” and is glued to a hard backing.
Abe Lee discovered gold in California gulch in 1860 and thousands of miners flocked to work placer gold in the area during that decade. The real silver boom began in 1877, however, when it was discovered that the black carbonate sands which had been such an annoyance to the placer miners were rich in silver ore. The town of Leadville was officially organized in 1878. At its peak in 1882, Leadville was big and wild, reaching an estimated population of over 50,000 people [Ref: www.westernmininghistory.com › Mining Towns › Colorado]. HKA#61452
