A crystal-clear photo showing what appears to be the main street of the town taken in the fall or early spring, as the trees have no leaves. The mountains in the background are hazy from fog or dust. Printed at lower left is the name of the town and the number 512. At lower right is printed Hook Photo. This is undoubtedly William Edward Hook (1833-1908), who began his career in Michigan before moving west in the 1880s. In 1885 he settled in Manitou Springs and opened a studio, and then opened another studio on Bennett Avenue in Cripple Creek during the 1890s gold rush. Later in the 1890s he moved again, this time to Colorado Springs. Not just a tourist photographer, Hook documented the Canadian Mounties, the Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway, Cripple Creek, Native Americans, mining scenes, and the Yellowstone area. After his death in 1908 he seems to have been mostly forgotten and his photographs rarely seen [Ref: history.utah.gov/research_and_collections/.../hook.html and www.yellowstonestereoviews.com/publishers/hook.html].
