1863 & 1865-Two early Wells Fargo checks framed under glass. One is datelined Jacksonville, July 8th, 1863 and the other Folsom, January 18, 1865. Both have 2 ct. Revenue Stamps at upper left. The Jacksonville check is especially rare. Jacksonville, located on the Tuolumne River, was once one of the largest mining towns in the Mother Lode, boasting a post office, several stores and three luxury hotels. Its original settler was Julian Smart; he planted the earliest gardens and orchards there in 1849. The town did not take his name, however. Instead it was named for Colonel Alden Jackson who arrived a bit later. He also gave his name to the existing city of Jackson, less than 35 miles distant. Despite periodic flooding, the town of Jacksonville continued until the 1960s when it fell victim to the expansion of the Don Pedro Reservoir. All traces of the town are now at the bottom of the reservoir [Ref: www.sierranevadageotourism.org/.../jacksonville...California.../...]. The black wooden frame measures approximately 15 x 15.” HKA#64254
