-The Yokuts are a member of the Penutian language family, and are closely related to the Maidu, Miwok and Wintu. The Yokuts lived in the San Joaquin Valley area for years and learned to live off of grasses and plants to create their baskets. Baskets were an all too important tool for the Yokuts, it proved use for storing and gathering food and carrying water. The material used for creating these baskets often came from tule reeds, which could only be harvested at certain times of the year. It wasn’t until the 20th Century that Native basketry became a major market for collectors and basket makers. This basket measures about 6” across and 3.25” tall. It maintains about 15 stitches per inch. It appears to have been created using sedge root, brackenfern root and redbud. HKA#64616
