Memorandum of Gold Bullion deposited with Selby Smelting & Lead Co. for Refining. Measures 11 7/8" x 5 1/8". By J.C. & E. Coleman, Grass Valley. Blue print on crème paper. Two items are listed on the receipt with a net value total of "$14,206.85". According to the California State Library, in the book Guide to the Selby Smelting & Lead Company Records, 1852-1976, "The Selby Smelting Company was organized in 1865 by Thomas H. Selby and Peter Naylor of New York. The lead produced [there] was used at the Selby Shot Tower in San Francisco. In 1870 the company purchased the property and business of the Pacific Refinery and Bullion Exchange. They refined gold, silver, and lead, and became the only private refinery on the west coast." Stains and minor foxing throughout. Deep folds and minor tears along the edges. Fair condition.
