Lot of 3. Rare. Excellent Condition. Vol. 2, Nos. 1, 7, and 8. This journal, edited by Frederick Collett, kept Native Californians and Californians who were “Indian Reformers” abreast of all the news concerning Native rights in the state. California Indians did not have treaties with the U. S. government before the Gold Rush occurred, so they sued the American Government to be paid for their lands after the fact. Collett was the person who went to Indian groups all throughout California, starting in 1910, with the idea of gathering them all together collectively to get Natives to join the class action suit. Talking the skittish California Natives into gathering together to sue the government took a long time – from 1906 onward (when the original lost unapproved treaties of 1852 were found). Charles Kelsey was the first to work toward the goal and Collett joined the group later. The Natives finally got permission to sue the U. S. government in 1928 and the suit was not settled until the 1960s and the Natives did not get their payouts until the 1970s. These three journals are full of talk about that issue – seeking justice for California Indians. Collett devoted his life to tirelessly working on behalf of California’s Natives. He died in a car crash in the mid 1950s on his way from another Native meeting near Yuba City.
