"Copy of San Francisco News Letter 60th Anniversary", California Advertiser. Vol. XCII, No. 4. San Francisco, Cal., July 20, 1916. Cover shows galloping horse and rider, with "Pony Express" caption, illustrated by L.B. Haste. Measures 10" x 13", and includes 82 pages, numerous advertisements, photographs, and a number of caricatures of notable residents. Examples of topics covered include: San Francisco Christened a Year Before the Gold Rush, Sutter's Fort and the Mill Where Marshall Discovered Gold, The Historical Railroad Event that United the East and the West on This Continent (Key Plate Identifying Figures in "Driving the Last Spike" listed on opposite page), The Rise of the San Francsico Chronicle, and Activities of the Vigilantes of '51 and '56. On page 1 is a large picture captioned "Frederick Marriott, Sr., Founder San Francisco News Letter." In Bancroft [Vol VI, pp. 185] "Marriott (F.) & Anderson, monetary agents," were located "in Cross & Hobson's building." Marriott was also noted as a financier in Bancroft [Vol. VII, pp. 168], when "banks were already prohibited by the constitution from issuing paper money. F. Mariott issued notes in Dec. 1851, for one and five dollars, under the name of 'cash orders,' but none would accept them. The common use of gold created a contempt for less tangible currency." Also includes a two page reproduction of "The San Francisco News Letter" from 60 years previously, providing "A Summary of Events from the 20th of October to the 5th of November, 1856." The following page is "The San Francisco News Letter Business Page." Several tears noted on front cover, with bottom left corner missing. Otherwise, very fine. Rare piece.
