Lot of 13 real photos and a brochure titled “Panamint City, the California Comstock,” by George Koenig [The Los Angeles Corral of Westerners, March 1988]. The brochure contains two facsimile copies of the Panamint News, dated December 15, 1874, and March 4, 1875 and a short history of Panamint City. The photos consist of 4 larger-size shots of landmarks near the town, including the rubble of old structures and two almost intact chimneys. The remaining 9 smaller photos all have brief typewritten descriptions attached. They are: 1) Furnace Inn in Death Valley—formerly a “high brow” place for the wealthy, then was taken over by the army as a hospital for sick and wounded soldiers (WWI), and then returned as a hotel. 2) A “Desert Rat” prospector and his 2 burros, fully packed, who would not give his name. 3) The old dance hall at Paniment (sic) City taken in 1922 (later burned). 4) The grave of Jim Dayton and Shorty Harris (see above). 5) The road between Ballarat and Panamint. 6) Panamint City. 7) “The Narrows” roadway between Ballarat and Panamint. 8) Some of the old buildings of Panamint and the Graham Brothers truck used by the Panamint Mining Company. 9) Another shot of Panamint City taken from the hillside above town.
