Each photo measures 3”x 4” and 7” x4 ½” on tan matte. Contrast is low to medium and focus is sharp. Slight wear on the photos with age marks throughout. The bottom right corner of the right photograph is bent slightly. The matte has little wear with the sides. Photographed by Ramanzo E. Wood, who was a traveling a landscape stereo photographer from Santa Cruz active from 1875-1905. The stereoview shows a busy view of Bodie’s main street. Two men stand next to a freight team. In the background the Occidental Hotel can be seen. Bodie started in the summer of 1860, but it wasn’t until 1874 that a rick strike was made. Bodie saw it’s population reach to 10,000 in 1880 but by 1883 the boom in Bodie ended. Bodie is now known today as a famous ghost town with over 20,000 visitors annually. [Gudde, California Gold Camps. 1875] Bodie stereoviews are exceptionally rare. In a quick survey, we found there are perhaps 7-11 different Bodie stereos in private hands and a similar amount in institutions. Fred doesn't think a Bodie stereoview has been on the market for at least a dozen years. It makes sense that the Bodie stereos are rare because they were basically made at the end of the popular stereo period. This piece dates from September 1879.
