C. 1915 Navajo Ganado Hubbell Trading Post Rug
This is truly an outstanding authentic original circa 1915 Navajo Ganado Hubbell Trading Post Rug. The rug is a very early original Hubbell Ganado and is considered a “pound” rug, which are rugs that were sold by the weight, with this being a thick, tightly woven and heavy example in near excellent condition for its age. Ganado patterns incorporated both Greek and Persian motifs and was established by Lorenzo Hubbell in 1890 at Ganado, Arizona where is trading post was located. This is a rare example as it shows both the outer hook border (Greek inspiration) and the half diamond inner border all within a rich “Ganado” red field. Two larger elements consist of white and brown stepped waterbug motifs separated vertically by a smaller diamond waterbug with crosses on either end. The rug has been expertly restored and cleaned by Robert Mann of Denver, Colorado, one of the very few who can do this restoration work on such early Navajo’s. This is truly a beautiful old well woven rug, a fabulous addition to any collection in Navajo art. The flatwoven soft wool rug shows natural undyed grays, browns and original vegetal natural dyes in a fantastic tight weave (Weft:12 and Warp:7). Most examples of Ganado Hubbell Trading Post rugs offered for public sale are typically of a later circa 1930-1940 age with this being a very early and finely made example in well preserved beautiful condition for its circa 1915 age. Provenance: From an astounding Persian and Navajo rug collection in Livingston, Montana. This would display wonderfully on a wall or on the floor, being well taken care of with a good pad. The rug measures 4 foot by 6 foot (48 inches by 72 inches). The rug shows both new and old repairs.
