C. 1900 Sioux Beaded Hide Hard Sole Moccasins
The lot features a fantastic set of beaded Indian hide and hard sole moccasins from the Sioux Indians dating to circa 1900. The set shows a thick Great American Bison Buffalo Indian tanned hide with hard sole parfleche rawhide soles with nice foot worn patina and is covered along the top, sides, back and tongue with traditional Sioux geometric beadwork. The beadwork appears to be all period correct 1800-1900 glass trade seed beads showing a chalk white background and unique Buffalo track, checkering and unique diamond “X” pattern in colors of red white hearts, cobalt and amber white heart (orange white heart). The Buffalo track (or sometimes referred to as horse track) pattern which is a square hoof symbol is shown seven times around the bottom edge of both moccasins. The medium height ankle has a sewn pink ribbon adornment and a heavy thick large hide tongue which is also beaded with a checkered pattern in red white heart and chalk white and a rolled tin jingle dangle cone bottom edge with some red dyed plume feathers. The beadwork is trade cotton thread sewn. Provenance: The set is from the estate ex-collection of James Schwickert of Hartford, Wisconsin and found to be an authentic early 1900 Sioux examples by the experts at Hindman and Cowan’s. The condition shows overall well preserved showing a thick Buffalo hide with soft supple condition, slightly stiffened at the back of the right set, some slight bead loss on both but other than that no major damages, no rips or tears and no separation. Each measures 10”L across the sole by 4”W by 3.5”H.
