Burt Glinn Original Time Life Magazine Photograph
For auction in this lot is a Burt Glinn original Time Life Magazine photograph of a Mint Bar & Grill patron, perusing a collection of Charles M. Russel prints for sale. The photo was part of a Time Life series, which came about as Montana locals were fundraising to keep original Charles M. Russell works in Montana. A November 1952 issue of Life Magazine states "At first he (Charles Russell) gave his sketches away, but in the long winters when he was out of a job and money, he learned to trade his art for food and supplies. his steadiest patron was the owner of the Mint saloon. In exchange for a drawing, Russell could get a drink of whiskey. For an oil, he was rewarded with a full quart.". When a Texas oil magnate purchased the collection for $300,000, Montanan's realized they had taken for granted the fact that they had a strong hold on the only collection which could rival the renowned Frederic Remington's works. The photograph carries signifigance as the Mint bar advertises the sale of Russell prints to re-acquire the collection that they had so recently sold off. The original photographs offered in this auction were gifted directly by Glinn to John Quigly (late father of the consigner, and creator of Helena, MT's Frontier Town), as the consigner states "He and my wild Irish dad had a good time while Glinn was at Frontier Town on assignment". The photograph shows exceptional clarity, and depth in printing, and is stamped numerous times on the back claiming capture by Glinn, and ownership of Time Life Magazine - not for reprint. The photograph shows good condition overall, with slight edge wear to the bottom right corner. The photograph is preservation shrink wrapped on acid-free mat board. The photograph itself measures 9 1/4" x 6 1/4".
