Probus was born between 230 and 235 A.D., entering the military upon reaching adulthood. The troops of Tacitus named Probus emperor upon the death of Tacitus in 268 A.D. His reign was marked by prosperity in the inner provinces, and security in the provinces, as Probus successfully deflected attacks against Rome from outsiders. Unlike most of his contemporaries, Probus was comparatively lenient towards vanquished peoples. In 282 A.D. Probus was murdered by his own troops. One account proposes that his soldiers felt slighted by Probus' utilizing them for civic purposes, such as draining marshes. JC-30101-66 JC-30166
