Aurelianus was the son of a mere peasant farmer, born around 215 A.D., who rose to power after an impressive military career. He served under both Gallienus and Claudius II. When Claudius died, the army refused to recognize his brother Quintillus as successor, and instead proclaimed Aurelian emperor in 270 A.D. Aurelian was often vindictive against those officials who slighted him. He was murdered in 275 A.D., when high ranking officials in the Praetorian Guard feared repraisals from Aurelianus.
