Roman coinage from this period almost invariably featured a depiction of an emperor (or occasionally his wife) on the obverse, and nothing else except for lettering. This is a highly unusual coin, the obverse depicting Arcadius being crowned by the hand of god. Starting with the conversion of Constantine I, Roman adopted Christianity, and this coin intones that Arcadius was truly chosen by god. Arcadius was born on New Years Day of 377 A.D. He was the eldest son of Theodosius I. He ruled the east, whilst his younger brother Honorius governed in the west. Considered a weak ruler, Arcadius was often overshadowed by his wife, Aelia Eudoxia. When he died in 408, he was little more than a figurehead.  JC-30101-136 JC-30236
