British Brass Barrel Blunderbuss

This flintlock has the design characteristics of a British Baker Blunderbuss. It is equipped with the very distinctive brass patch box door on the right side of the buttstock, stock with cheekpiece, brass escutcheon on the upper wrist and brass elongated "S" shaped trigger guard. These features are found on the Baker rifle, a rifled firearm that was an improvement on the famed Brown Bess carried by the British during the Napoleonic Wars, and was patented by Ezekiel Baker of London. According to the consignor notes, it is believed that this firearm is a prototype Baker blunderbuss which explains the Baker features but no markings, and the gun was likely manufactured after Waterloo for use by the Royal Navy. The buttplate, side plate and ramrod pipes are also brass. The trigger guard has provisions for a swivel. The lock plate is marked "C.H." (partially covered by the frizzen spring). The stock also features a checkered wrist, "79/D" stamped near the cheekpiece and a single barrel wedge. With the gun is a horn tipped wooden ramrod.

Good. The brass has an attractive appearance. A condemnation indentation (renders weapon unfireable) is present on the left side of the barrel at the breech. The action components have a smooth gray patina. The stock is fine showing some minor pressure dents and scratches with a filled hole behind the trigger guard. Mechanically fine.
