(8) Important typed letters signed ("Gutzon Borglum"; one signed "Gutzon") regarding the ongoing troubles with the Mount Rushmore project, 16 total pages (8.5 x 11 in. & 7.25 x 10.25 in.; 216 x 279 mm & 184 x 260 mm.), Rapid City, South Dakota and San Antonio, Texas, 15 March 1935 to 7 May 1937. Correspondent include President Franklin D. Roosevelt; John Harlan, Assistant to General Counsel, Treasury Department; and National Parks Service Director Arno B. Cammerer. File and staple holes at top and left margins, a few minor losses and tears not affecting text, light mailing folds, minor glue remnants to one page. Typed letter signed to FDR, 5 pages, 15 March 1935. Borglum writes in part: ...Ridiculous as the following may seem, the great work that has been accomplished at Mount Rushmore...has been carried to its present state of perfection without the contractual assistance of trained aides, without trained sculptor assistances, without the assistance of engineers, and even without assistance of men capable of giving intelligent directions to men, and also without the aid of any trained stonecutters...The cutting down of our effective working strength has delayed the progress of the work about two years... $600 - $800
