Blackfoot Stem & Catlinite Bird Head Pipe 19th C.
The lot features a fine carved morning star wood flat stem and bird head carved catlinite pipe dating to the 19th Century from the Northern Plains Native American Indian Blackfoot. The Blackfoot (Blackfeet) pipe stem shows a traditional flat ash wood puzzle stem with traces of old red, yellow and black ocher mineral pigment polychrome paint. The top and bottom of the stem show a total of four four-pointed morning star symbols along with a zig-zag triangular carved border and hot file burned outside edge. The piece has a short make, said to have been used for by the women. The piece is accompanied with a heavily carved catlinite Minnesota pipe stone in the effigy shape of a bird head, possibly a Bald Eagle or Turkey Vulture. The pipe bowl has a short make with rich dark red to pink spotted coloring and nice mellow patina along with dark bowl from much honest age and use. The bottom of the bowl has a pierced hole which holds a braided drop of trade clothe being sinew tied and holding two red white heart and spotted medicine skunk beads. The piece is in very good well-preserved condition and is truly a unique and authentic early example. Measures connected 17.75”L, stem is 15.75”L by 1.75”W. Bowl is 3”x3”x1.5” with a 10”L drop.
