The lot features an exceptional set of fully beaded gauntlet gloves from the Assiniboine Native American Indian tribe of Canada and dates to circa 1800’s. Each glove is adorned with exceptional beadwork having three five-point stars, marked “JB”, a four piece accent and two crossed flags. The flags show a canton with vertical cross being of red and blue and are thought to be the Assiniboine Indian who made this over 100 years ago interpretation of the then early Canadian Red Ensign flag when under British control. An example of the British flag from circa 1876 is shown with a lighter blue color and red background such as this flag shown here. The set shows a heavy Great American Bison Buffalo Indian tanned hide construction with red velvet trade clothe lining having excellent beadwork with blue trade clothe accents across the top. The beadwork is in all period correct early petit and normal glass seed beads of chalk white, sky padre blue, Cheyenne pink, butterscotch yellow, medium green, red, faceted brass, and faceted metal iridescent. The gloves are thought to date from circa 1870-1890 and show a fine original museum quality condition. The gloves show some slight bead loss with an excellent original patina and display wonderfully with good overall condition. The gloves would have been worn by a full-size man or warrior. The gloves show a long Buffalo hide fringe on each glove, a typical attribute. Provenance: From a large Great Falls, Montana Old West and American Indian collection. The Assiniboine Native American Indians share a common ancestry with the Sioux people and believed by many to have a heritage with the Stoney, Santee, Lakota and Yankon-Yanktonai tribes being separated in the 17th Century. During the 19th Century the Assiniboine tribe resided in Northern Montana, Canada and North Dakota near the Missouri river. Truly a rare addition to any collection would be this fine example of scarcely seen Assiniboine beadwork having a nice addition of a 19th Century Canadian flag and displayed in good condition. Without the additional length of tanned hide fringe, each gauntlet measures 16 1/4" long, and 7 1/2" wide. Fringe is 5 inches in length.
