Angelo Comolli (Italian, 1863-1949), Two Figurative Drawings on Board, ca. 1911-1913
This lot features two figurative drawings on board by Angelo Comolli (Italian, 1863-1949), produced as part of a portfolio during his studies at the Eric Pape School of Art in Boston, ca. 1911-1913. The primary composition is a full-length profile portrait of a woman in an evening gown, rendered in pen, ink, and wash with white gouache heightening on paper. This work is mounted to a charcoal-gray card within a larger tan board. The reverse side features a charcoal and pastel study of a woman's face peering from beneath a wide-brimmed hat, highlighted with red and white chalk accents. These drawings exemplify the illustrative style taught at American art academies during the early 20th century.
