Angelo Comolli (Italian, 1863-1949), Standing Male Nude Study, 1910
This original charcoal drawing on toned paper is a standing male nude study by Italian artist Angelo Comolli (1863-1949). Executed in an academic realist style, the work depicts a male subject in profile wearing a loincloth. The figure is posed with one hand raised to the back of his head and the other arm positioned behind his back. The artist utilizes dense hatching and tonal modeling to define the musculature and form. This work is identified as being from Comolli's portfolio during his time at the Eric Pape School of Art in Boston, circa 1911-1913. The drawing is signed Comotti- and dated 1910- in the lower right corner. The verso of the sheet displays a faint ghosting of the figure and similar paper discoloration patterns.
