Angelo Comolli (Italian, 1863-1949), Portrait of a Woman, 1911
This original drawing on toned wove paper by Italian artist Angelo Comolli (1863â€"1949) was created during his time at the Eric Pape School of Art in Boston, circa 1911â€"1913. Executed in charcoal and graphite with white chalk highlights, the work depicts a full-length portrait of a woman wearing early 1910s attire, including a gathered dress and large hat. She is shown holding a draped garment over one arm and a small bag or muff in the other hand. The composition uses strong directional lighting to create dramatic highlights and shadows. The drawing is signed "Comolli" in the upper corner. The verso shows faint transferred ghosting from the primary image and discoloration from an earlier mounting.
