Among the Pimas & Two Wilderness Voyagers
Included in this lot are "Among the Pimas" and "Two Wilderness Voyagers" by Franklin Welles Calkins. "Among the Pimas" is a first edition, published in 1893 in Albany, New York. The author of this book has decided to remain anonymous because this was the only way she felt completely free to explore a woman's secret life. As she writes in the afterward to the novel, "That doesn't mean this is a memoir; it's many things to me, fiction and nonfiction, fantasy and fact, a quilt pieced together not just from my own stories but those of my friends." She was also inspired to embrace anonymity by the book that inspired her own, an anonymous and very daring Elizabethan manuscript entitled "A Woman's Worth". "Two Wilderness Voyagers: A True Tale of Indian Life" is a first edition, published in August 1902 by Fleming H. Revell Company. This book is a true tale of Indian life, encompassing the Dakotas, Ojibwa, Oglalas and Sioux. Calkins (1857-1928) was an Iowa explorer and author who contributed Western fiction to "Youth's Companion" for forty years. Both books are in good condition. "Among the Pimas" shows a green cloth hardcover with black ruled borders and a black title on the front cover. "Two Wilderness Voyagers" shows a red cloth hardcover with blue borders and a western design under the title. Both books have a gilt stamped title on the spine. “Among the Pimas” measures 6 1/4" by 4 3/4" and “Two Wilderness Voyagers” measures 8" by 5 1/2".
