Offered to you in this lot is a historic U. S. Model 1842 Box Lock Percussion Navy Pistol manufactured for the U.S. Government by N. P. Ames of Springfield, Mass. The .54 caliber Model 1842 has the distinction of being the first U.S. martial percussion pistol produced and delivered under contract to the government. With only 2,000 Ames Navy box lock pistols produced and delivered, surviving specimens are extremely scarce and sought after by collectors today. Most of these scarce and historical arms saw service through the Civil War. Because of their large caliber, some even found their way to the western plains where “buffalo runners,” who hunted by galloping their horses into herds of stampeding bison, shot directly at the panicked animals from their mounts at point blank range! This fine example bears the early date of 1844 on both the lock plate and barrel (dates were 1843, 1844 or 1845). The correct six inch barrel is clearly and correctly stamped at the rear “USN” over “1844” over “RP” over “P” and the rear of the lock plate is clearly stamped “U.S.N.” over “1844” with the center lock plate marking “N.P. AMES, SPRINGFIELD, MASS.” Still retains the correct and original swivel steel ramrod (these often missing) as well as the correct mellow, uncleaned brass barrel band, trigger guard and circular butt cap. Excellent mechanics along with un-sanded, un-altered wood and lovely aged patina make this a most desirable arm for the Navy/Marine arms collector or general U.S. martial arms collector. The unique center-hung box lock hammer along with the square grip shape makes this a most unusual and attractive single shot U.S. issued pistol during the Pre-Mexican war sailing ship days! Much more scarce than the round butt army models. The pistol qualifies as an Antique Percussion Hand Gun, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check. Serial Number: NSN.
