American Indian Hammer Poll Tomahawk 18th Century
The lot features a wonderful and scarce solid brass / bronze Hammer Poll Tomahawk war club from the American Indian dating to the mid-to-late 18th Century. The piece shows an early pattern being forged from brass / bronze showing a downward flaring axe head with rounded blade, round eyelet hole with forged moldings filed line which culminates in the round hammer poll which is adorned with finely forged moldings. The piece is extremely similar to the example in Harold L. Peterson’s 1965 “American Indian Tomahawks” figure / photograph 91. on page 99, shown as a 18th Century Hammer Poll. The inside of the eye hole shows a stamping faintly identified as “N”. The piece has an excellent mellow coloring and dark black patina from honest authentic age and use. Provenance: From a historic Eastern Montana American Indian Collection, where the piece was found to be an authentic original, one of the finest collections of American Indian weaponry and antiquities in Montana. Measures 6 3/8”L and is 2 1/8”L across the blade with a 1.25”D eyelet hole.
